The Dos And Don’ts Of Portable Containers For Storage
Construction
Extra storage space is always helpful. However, mindlessly storing items can cause damage to your goods and defeat the purpose of storage for your business.
Many things can go wrong if you aren’t taking precautions to make sure that you are storing your items safely, which can cause fragile items to break, costly equipment to rust, and temperature-sensitive items to become damaged. There are steps you can take to make sure you are using your storage container effectively and keeping all the items in it in the best shape.
Basic Guidelines for Storage Container Maintenance
Dos for Portable Storage
- Keep the items you don’t need immediately at the back of the container. The items you need to access most should go in last.
- Label all boxes and items so that you know what’s inside. This saves you time and energy that would be spent on opening each box to see what is inside.
- Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or newspaper.
- Clean items thoroughly before storing so that there is no buildup of moss, mold, or fungus.
- Dismantle all components of goods such as bigger pieces of equipment or furniture to maximize storage space.
- Oil equipment parts that are likely to rust.
- Install shelves to make the most of your storage space.
- Ensure you have the right size container: 40 ft. containers are ideal for storing pieces with more volume than weight (like electronics), while smaller 20 ft. containers are better suited for low-volume, heavy goods like cement sacks.
- Ensure your unit is always locked and that children can’t access it.
- Invest in HVAC for belongings that are climate-sensitive and should be stored in a climate-controlled unit, like paperwork, electronics, and upholstered furniture.
- Get someone to check on the items in storage occasionally, especially if you are going to be away.
- Increase security for high-value items. You can get special storage units with high-security features including heavy-duty puck hasp and locks.
Don’ts for Portable Storage
- Wrap items, especially furniture, in plastic. Plastic tends to retain moisture and can damage your valuable items quickly.
- Randomly stacking boxes. Stacking boxes randomly can damage items. Stack the heavier ones on the bottom and add the lighter boxes on top.
- Don’t forget to take steps to keep pests away. It may be a good idea to put mothballs in your storage container. However, bear in mind that these can leave residue or a stain, so it’s better to keep them away from upholstery or items that may pick up these stains.
- Keep flammable items in your storage container. Oil, spare gasoline in bottles, chemicals, aerosol cans, and other related items are best to avoid storing in these containers. If you are unsure whether something is flammable or toxic, ask a professional.
